Diane Stang says: Speaking as a teacher and those first times that you’re teaching math for the first time, or in a new grade, it can very overpowering and very overwhelming, especially when you’re looking around and seeing what other people are doing. So my advice would be to relax, first of all. Relax and develop that growth mindset that we want kids to have. In other words, with time and effort and patience, you can do this and you will succeed. And the whole idea, I would suggest, first of all, is really using something like Math Place here really gives you that opportunity to learn the math, it’s got that professional learning built-in, you then get to try it immediately as soon as you’ve read about it, and then reflect upon that math. I think it’s breaking it up like this is a lot more empowering for you, rather than just reading a whole book on something like this.
